The Wood – Western Red Cedar
Our wood products are constructed from Western Red Cedar, which is a superior outdoor wood. Cedar is well reputed for its resistance to rotting and insects. We use only kiln-dried lumber, which promotes dimensional stability. The grade of cedar is one of the highest you can specify and is considered a ‘clear’ grade, which means there are little to no knots within the boards.

Protect your gate by treating the surface with a quality, protective wood sealer suitable for cedar. Typical wood weathering characteristics will be evident over time and contributes to the character of the wood. Sealing the wood surface will prevent water absorption, excessive drying, and discoloration. If the moisture level of the wood is allowed to significantly change, excessive dimensional changes and/or warping can occur. Note: Some dimensional variation is expected during weather changes.
If you are applying multiple finishes (for example a clear coat over a stain product), be sure to check with the manufacturer or retailer for compatibility between the two materials. Some coastal areas are known to have high salt content in the air which can expedite the deterioration of the finish surface.

Outdoor wood finishes will deteriorate over time. We recommend reviewing surfaces for condition. One way to check the finish is to see if water beads on the surface, rather than absorbing into the wood. If there are areas that seem to be more exposed than others, proactive attention to these areas will increase longevity of the product. Areas that may need special attention are areas that receive a lot of sun exposure, the end of the vertical frame pieces where water can most easily absorb, and the pockets created where the panels enter the frame.

About Our Warranty

Western Red Cedar has natural variations in color and brightness (see below). The contrasting character of the wood is a beautiful aspect of this wood specie. These variations include yellow, pink, red, and brown tones. The lightness of each tone may vary as well. The tonal differences and contrast may be accentuated when a clear finish is applied. Finishes that are higher in pigment such as ‘semi-transparent’ finishes may reduce the tonal differences.

During the manufacturing process we carefully hand select boards and determine the positioning of boards so that there is an balanced look to the final product. Boards which are significantly different in tone (brightness), will not be placed next to each other. For example, in the image below the boards that are defined as 'Dark' and 'Light' would not typically be placed adjacent to each other within the gate structure.

Many of our customers choose to have their gates provided in the unfinished condition, with no stain or sealing material applied. If you select this option for your gate, the wood will have a well-sanded, smooth surface that is ready to accept the finish of your choice. Because our gates are constructed from kiln-dried cedar, it is very important not to let the gate absorb moisture before applying the finish. For best coverage, we recommend applying the finish before hanging the gate. Gates that are left unfinished will have a shortened lifespan and will be more susceptible to deterioration of the wood as well as joint failure.

We offer a beautiful selection of stain colors from which to choose.

OIL BASED STAIN: We use exclusively Sikkens Cetol SRD 250 oil-based penetrating stains. The color options are shown below.

WATER BASED STAIN: Our water-based dark stain options provide a dark, even tone. The General Finishes water-based Exterior 450 wood stain color options are shown below. Additional layers of this stain will darken the overall look of the gate.

As with any finish, these stains may require occasional re-coating.

You can also choose a professionally applied urethane clear coat for gate doors up to 4ft wide. This service includes three coats of professionally sprayed semi-gloss urethane, with hand sanding between each coat. As with any finish, the clear coat may require occasional re-coating.
We also offer a professionally sprayed, painted finish option for gate doors up to 7’ wide (14ft double swing gates). You may chose from black or white, in a semi-gloss sheen, or we can custom color match the color of your choice. For custom color matching we request that you mail us a color swatch. Painted gates receive two coats of primer and three coats of water-based exterior Miller Paint, with sanding between each coat for a superior painted finish. Extra paint will be sent along with your gate for future touch-ups. As with any finish, the paint may require occasional re-coating.
All metal window art options, as well as our medium and high load hinges, decorative hinge straps and clavos are finished with a protective powder coating. This finish is durable and protects the metal from the elements, preventing corrosion. Our standard powder coat color is black, 20% gloss. This color blends well in most settings and compliments our product line. If, however, you require an alternate powder coat color, this can be accommodated for an additional charge. Powder coat colors can be viewed below. Extra charges may apply for custom powder coat colors 2013. All rights reserved
